In which your humble moderator runs for the LJ Advisory Board Over the past year I've become increasingly concerned with LiveJournal's lack of a backup and restore feature -- many of your know someone who's account has been hacked and deleted and they've been told by LiveJournal that there is no way to restore their entries -- sometimes years of them. I feel that if LiveJournal is to survive another ten years it needs to be able to preserve the entries people lovingly and laboriously enter every day. For this reason I've decided to run for the LiveJournal Advisory Board. In the however many years I've been moderating this group I think many of you have known me to be thoughtful, fair minded, polite, and reasonable. I ask you to take a moment to vote for me. I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think it was urgent. You can also read a more detailed account of why I've chosen to run here including changes I hope to see JiveJournal make which will benefit photographers. Thanks for your time. Feel free to repost in your own journals but I ask that you don't repost in any communities without the express permission of the moderator. I think this is important. Thank you. Kyle

| The 10 Most Insane Medical Practices in History |

Have you ever been left with the impression after a thorough poking, prodding and testicular cupping at the doctor's office that perhaps they don't always know what's best? The thought is usually pushed from your mind, after all these people had to go through years of school and thousands of dollars of their wealthy parents' money to get where they are! If you can't trust them about your health, who can you trust? Here's the thing though, doctors have a long storied background of not knowing what the hell they're doing. History is filled with stories of hilarious medical ineptitude, and in all likeliness, today's medical practices will be similarly snorted at 100 years down the road. In other words, if you're looking to justify your medical phobia so you can rationalize not getting that ever-growing lump on your neck checked out, you're in the right place. The Amusement Park is the pinnacle of cultural achievement: technology and resources dedicated purely to people having fun. And we can all agree that history wasn't complete until Walt Disney allowed humanity to experience "The Happiest Place on Earth!" (for a nominal fee). Now societies throughout the world have their own wondrous amusement parks. And like Disney did for us, their parks reflect their culture's stories, passions and traditions ... and make outsiders cock their heads and say "What the fuck!?" More Heremood: sick music: Ellen |

The Gruesome Origins of 5 Popular Fairy Tales We know what's you're thinking. "What the hell is Cracked writing articles about fairy tales for? That's kids stuff! Give us more articles about the Top 10 Transformers Characters, or Worst Dressed Thundercat!" And that's good, because that means our Spyware technology is getting better than ever. The thing about fairy tales, though, is that they weren't always for kids. Back when these stories were first told around campfires and in taverns in some medieval village there were very few kids present. These were racy, violent parables to distract peasants after a hard day's dirt farming, and some of them made Hostel look like, well, kid's stuff. The best creepy campfire stories are always the ones that end with the words, "...And it’s all true, because I have the damned documentation here to prove it!" In that spirit, we've tracked down five of the creepiest tales and urban legends that really happened to real people, proving once and for all that nothing is more terrifying than everyday life. A tiger is seen inside a temporary cage at the Animal Rescuing Center in Soc Son, 60 km outside Hanoi January 9, 2007. The Hanoi Zoo admitted selling dead tigers at auctions to Vietnamese animal traffickers, the latest in a spate of violations of international conservation laws meant to protect endangered Indochina tigers, newspapers reported. This handout photo provided by the Smithsonian's National Zoo shows Luke, the male African lion, watching the snow fall at the zoo in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2007. Although it does not snow in his native Africa, Luke seemed content to lie outside of his heated den and finish his lunch, occasionally shaking the snow from his mane.
